Decada's 10 Year Playbook: Building Our Unfair Advantage
Last month marked Decada Group’s 3 year anniversary.
To celebrate, here are some reflections on our journey + a breakdown of our current playbook as an SMB holding company.
Decada’s 10 year vision is to build a $100M+ collection of diverse & eclectic small local businesses in our community here in Salt Lake City.
With no outside capital and only very conservative debt, we’ve scaled to 5 operating companies in 3 years, each growing ~60-65% / year.
We’ve done this by breaking a lot of conventions I read on SMB Twitter when it comes to “buying small” – or what we call “subscale” SMBs doing $1-5M in revenue.
Generally, the advice to not buy too small is the right advice. If you can afford to, buy larger and more established companies.
But had we followed this advice ourselves, Decada Group might not exist in the first place.
So with $750 in startup capital and no outside investors, we’ve driven some pretty remarkable growth in our first 3 years:
